Necklines – it doesn’t have to be a mysterious part of women’s image

Why do we all seem to feel insecure about which necklines do or don’t suit us. It’s probably because the neckline of a garment sits just below our face and so when we make eye contact we take in the neckline shape sub consciously and it affects the way we see the person and therefore what we feel about them. But it’s different for everybody because as with all things to do with Image and Style – it’s all about YOU!
You need to look at the angle of your jaw and the length of your neck to work out what will suit you best. If you have a long swan like neck then there is plenty of room for high stiff necklines like a polo neck or a choker but if you try these looks on a soft neck you just end up looking like a tortoise poking his nose out of the shell! The softer necks tend to look better in more open necklines and softer detail. Perhaps a scarf tied loosely, a cowl neck jumper or a waterfall frill on a blouse, dress or cardigan. Try any of these on that long neck and the result looks like a periscope peeping up above the waves of the sea!
The other factor that is really important when choosing your necklines is whether your face is made of angles or softer lines. Is your face a diamond, a rectangle, square, triangle? or are you more comfortable with the softer descriptions of oval, round, soft square, heart or a pear shape? When we know we can work out whether angular necklines such as V necks, boat necks or slash necks and squares work best on you or whether it’s the scoops, semi scoops and sweet hearts that flatter you best.
The other thing that is important when choosing a neckline is how much skin looks good. Sometimes less is more and sometimes more is definitely more!!! We all know that bigger boobs need a lower neckline to prevent that ski slope effect! Low V’s can create an optical illusion of slimmer lines over a generous bust by drawing the eye down rather than outwards! But this isn’t all that’s involved. This actually depends on the personality of the person. Jane Asher, Princess Anne, Darcy Bussell, all delicate pretty women, look a bit uncovered with too much skin showing. It doesn’t get sexier it just makes us want to cover them up a bit. They appear slightly vulnerable. Whereas the curvy Martine McCutcheons, Joan Collins and Lisa Marie Presleys of this world need plenty of shoulder and cleavage on display to charm their way through life! The wider and deeper the neckline the better the look gets.
It’s a fascinating thing how WHO we are, our personality, affects the way we should dress just as much as the shape of our body. All your neckline mysteries can be solved I promise. Just come and find out for yourself – I’d love to meet you!
